Charitable Contribution

We generate a little bit of money and hopefully a lot of fun here on It’s about time we put a little bit of that money to a good cause. Starting in 2012 we started donating $0.25 (5%) per bracket to charity.

In 2012 we we able to send $109.62 to Amazon Promise, $79.25 which came from the $0.25 per bracket as well as an extra $30.37 that was donated. While $109.62 may not sound like a lot of money, and it’s not, the charities make every dollar count in their efforts.

The American Cancer Society received $112.65 from us as a result of the 2013 pool, donated in memory of my father-in-law and long time pool participant, John Mergel.

Last years winners –  Graham Touhey & Elizabeth Piegtrangelo – each picked a charity (Jeff Dailey Memorial Foundation and Franny Strong Foundation respectively) as well as I, your humble host (Amazon Promise). How’s that for 3 outside-the-box picks! For each bracket you enter you will get the opportunity to vote for this year’s charity. Once you submit your picks you will be directed to a page where you get to vote.

Amazon Promise

Amazon Promise is a U.S.-based, non-profit organization founded to provide desperately needed medical and dental care to remote populations living in the Upper Amazon Basin of Northeastern Peru. Our Peruvian operations are headquartered in the jungle city of Iquitos where we provide medical services and education to its residents  and neighboring Belen. Additionally, since 1993 we have conducted routine medical outreach, training and education in 40 remote villages.

It is run by my dear friend Patty Webster.

 Jeff Dailey Memorial Foundation

Picked by Graham Touhey : ” I have found a charity that I would like to donate to that is close to my heart, and to our area here in the Lehigh Valley.  Its the Jeff Dailey Memorial Foundation.  Jeff was a college student when his apartment caught fire, and he unfortunately lost his life.  He was about 6 years older than me or so, taught me to shoot, and was an absolutely phenomenal basketball player.  The foundation gathers money for college scholarships to the local schools in the area.”

Franny Strong Foundation

Picked by Elizabeth Pietrangelo : ” I would like to nominate Franny Strong Foundation for next year’s charity.  I am the treasurer of this 501(c)3 organization.  It was founded in 2012 by a friends of mine who lost their infant daughter to the Pertussis (Whooping Cough) disease.  The Foundation supports Pertussis research, education, and awareness.”

So thank you for letting me divert a small portion of the pool’s funds to charity and help me point my needle a little less towards “damnation”. Besides, you all could use a little salvation as well.
